Guest Post: 4 Ways To Shoot A Great Outfit Post

For the last few weeks you’ve seen us checked in at the same places, blogging  at the same fashion events and photographing each other’s style.. and now I’m pleased to announce that Yolanda from BNEstyle will be a regular monthly contributor to The Blonde Silhouette. Presenting her first guest posting, a life-behind-the-lens lesson for all bloggers, beginner and established, a how to guide on perfecting an outfit post.

I spend quite a lot of time photographing people (bloggers, models, friends and family) and I always try to feature both their personality and style. Here are a few ways, from my experience, to improve your photographs and your post.

1. Try a different pose. If you freeze when in front of the camera, concentrating on moving around, playing with your clothing, walking and turning, even just looking away from the camera can help you relax and give you a more interesting composition.

me-sitting-on-grounddon’t enjoy being photographed so when I don’t look at the camera I tend to look more relaxed. And the reason I am sitting on the ground in this shot is because I loved the red colour of this brick wall!

2. See the world from different angles. Look around your location, is there a way the photographer can get up on a bench and shoot down on you? Can they shoot you with the sun behind you to create a backlit look instead of being in full sun? If you are shooting shoes can the photographer get down on the ground to get a better angle? Don’t be afraid to experiment because that’s when you get the most interesting shots.

3. Don’t forget the details. Are you wearing some interesting jewellery, or carrying an amazing bag? Make sure you zoom in on these details to show the item close up so the readers can see the colour and texture of the item.

4. Be a ruthless editor. Some blogs show the same person, in very similar poses, several times which is not very interesting. You must be ruthless with your selection of photographs because five well chosen images is more interesting to your reader than 10 mediocre ones. Always leave the reader wanting more.

Next time I will discuss choosing locations!

On Wednesday night I found myself sitting VIP style aside the runway, gift bag in hand, anticipating an exclusive preview of the Commbank Natural Fibres Fashion Parade which showcases annually at the Ekka. Sitting either side of me were my two blogger friends, Yolanda from BNEstyle and Juliette from Lace N Ruffles. Forming a Brisbane blogger fash pack, we three have been selected as sponsored Ekka bloggers this year. We plan to keep you posted on everything Ekka fashion related and you will most probably spot us stalking fashionistas, promoting our #ekkaselfie on Instagram and enjoying yummy strawberry sundays!

Now a treat for all you fashionistas! Here is sneak peek from the Commbank Natural Fibres Fashion Parade preview…

Bows and Trimmings…

For the last few months, my nail design has neglected creativity. After a while simple block colours in neutral hues becomes rather routine and or, for lack of a more eloquent word…boring. Like a junk food addict robbed of sugar, I decided rather than introducing a little nail art into my design, I would instead go all out with bows and trimmings! To keep in with a darker winter palette, I have chosen a deep lilac- a colour that is still feminine while creating a little excitement.  Bows or polkadots….are far too hard to chose between, so I decided to feature both!

Am I capable of doing this myself? Absolutely not, however, I am very lucky to have an amazing nail technician located in trendy James Street, Brisbane. Brisbane Fashionistas, if you are looking for a killer mani/pedi then you should definitely check out Scratchers Nails in the fashion precinct of James Street. With a full range of shellac colours, stamps, bows, studs and jewels, Scratchers Nails will have you feeling and looking like a punk princess in no time!

Bloggers, what’s your nail style? A simple colour or an intense nail pattern?

Khaki…not an easy colour to feature as the main focus of an outfit, but when teamed with tans, black and chocolate browns, the colour creates a lovely warm, earthy aesthetic.  A return is seen of those shiny, patent boots of which I admire, creating a very military feel with the khaki. Military is once again a key trend this A-W 13/14, and my advice is to be brave and embrace it.

Style Tip: Remember, when styling a military inspired look, avoid an outfit comprised of only heavy pieces. Tone down the seriousness with a pop of bright coloured accessory, or a relaxed, floppy hat. Not only will this add some light to the colour palette, but it will also make the ensemble look and feel more personalised.

Stumbling across this desolate, run down space, I felt it most appropriate to use this to my advantage as a great visual background, complementing the military ensemble. Not to mention, the sunshine created a warm and inviting environment for myself and Brisbane blogger, The Fringe to escape the indoor winter chill and build a natural tan. Check out her stylish musings and pay her blog a visit at Love, The Fringe. Until then….at ease!
